Building permit for the FlexBase Technology Center Laufenburg

Laufenburg, April 10, 2025 - The FlexBase Group has received the go-ahead for the construction of the FlexBase Technology Center Laufenburg (TZL), which will house the world's largest battery storage facility and a high-performance data center for artificial intelligence (AI). The ground-breaking ceremony will take place in the coming weeks, with commissioning planned for summer 2028. The Laufenburg-based construction group ERNE will realize this project of national importance.
Cutting-edge technology with sustainable aspirations
Built in the immediate vicinity of the "Star of Laufenburg", the electricity hub of Central Europe, the FlexBase Technology Center with the world's largest redox flow battery storage facility with a total capacity of more than 1.6 GWh and an output of over 800 MW will actively drive forward Switzerland's energy transition and secure the energy supply of tomorrow in the long term.
Attached to the technology center is an AI data center that combines cutting-edge technology with the highest security standards and uses innovative water cooling. In future, Laufenburg's old town is to be supplied with district heating from the existing data centers in the FlexBase operations building, which will save around 75,000 tons of CO₂ in Laufenburg alone over the next 30 years.
The Laufenburg-based ERNE Group is the implementation partner
As part of the strategic partnership with the FlexBase Group, ERNE is responsible for the realization of the TZL. As the general contractor, the ERNE Group is responsible for construction management and the construction of the entire building. The construction work for the 20,000m2 building will be carried out by the various ERNE companies. These include structural and civil engineering as well as the building envelope and façade.
Giuseppe Santagada, CEO of the ERNE Group, comments:
The realization of this project of the century by the ERNE Group fills me with pride - it is emblematic of our contribution to economic development and the attractiveness of the location in the region.
